NUR559 - Practicum III

This is the last clinical course in the ANP program. The seminar portion of this course focuses on the course objectives as well as preparing the student for their first position as an NP. Our patient care focus will be the elder patient and issues specific to this group. We also focus on the "nuts and bolts" of practice such as getting certified, contract negotiation and landing that first position. In the clinical portion of this course you must focus on use of evidenced-based medicine in guiding your patient care decisions and perfecting your critical thinking and diagnostic skills. Your log should focus on the elder in the practice setting. This course is a culmination of everything you have learned since starting your masters education at Molloy College and as I call it "the putting it all together" semester.

  • Seminar 1

At our first class we will discuss the specific steps to becoming certified as an NP in NYS. Please go to the NYS web pages for nurse practitioners, review the requirements and forms listed there. Print out the following forms: From 1, Form 2, Form 4NP. You will not need the other forms at this time.

Also please go to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and print the following: The certification handbook (at the bottom of the page) and the application for Adult Certification at the top of the page. When you get to to website, you do not need to log-in. Click on the Certification tab then Certification Documents in the orange drop down boxes. Please bring these documents to class.

The web addresses for these both can be found in the "Bookmarks" section of this page.

  • Seminar 2 - Palliative Care/End-of-Life Issues

This seminar will include a student led roundtable discussion on the NYS Laws for End-of-Life Care. Each student should bring information to discuss on how your facility is meeting the new laws. What actually happens in the ER? How do patients and families view this issue? How does your preceptor or clinical site view this issue and how are they meeting these new requirements?
  • Seminar 3 Employment Contracts

Included are examples of NP contracts to assist your understanding of issues that are common in NP employment. Some are very simple and some are very detailed. I have also included an "independent contractor" agreement should you need one in the future. Remember, the NYS Collaborative Practice Agreement is an entirely different document and the two should not be confused. Please review these documents before class and be ready to discuss as per the course schedule.

Review the chapter in Buppert's Book: NP Business and Legal Guide: "The employed nurse practitioner."
  • Seminar 4 - Last Class Discussion

This is your last class in the Adult NP program. Review the information posted here. Bring in any and all practice questions you may have with you to class for discussion.  Please ensure that you  bring all evaluation forms to class to include: the preceptor evaluation, clinical hours tool, YOUR evaluation of the preceptor and the graduate course evaluation. You will not receive a grade for this course unless all 4 of the evaluation tools are received.
  • Case Study 1 Resources

While we have not discussed Alzheimer's specifically in Diagnostics & Therapeutics classes, there will be questions on your certification exams regarding Alzheimer's and Dementia. Your textbooks also have excellent information on these disease processes, so pay special attention to Risk Factors, History, Physical Exam and the Plan of Care/Education for each. You will only be asked about the basic drugs for Alzheimers such as Exelon, Aricept etc., of course by generic names. You must know the MMSE by heart.
