Description

This course will consist of an examination of the curriculum goals, instructional strategies and materials for teaching mathematics to the diverse learner in grades seven to twelve. It will focus on methods for making mathematics meaningful by promoting an active learning process. The teacher candidate will learn to develop learning experiences and conduct assessments reflecting the processes of growth and development of the adolescent. Attention is given to planning and teaching mathematical tasks and activities for students who are culturally diverse; those with limited English proficiency, and those with special needs. Teacher candidates will learn how to use manipulatives to develop concepts and utilize instructional technology, including the calculator and computer. They will learn and be able to discuss the current issues and problems in math education today such as the implications of the TIMSS report. Finally, the New York State's Mathematics, Science, and Technology Lear
