This course presents an integrated interdisciplinary analysis of the variety of human behaviors that have been objectively and subjectively labeled deviant. It examines the theoretical approaches to the causes of deviance including theories of opportunity, social organization, social distress, power, responsibility and mental illness. It introduces the student to the processes of punishment and control and the modalities of treatment that have been employed to deter and combat deviant behaviors.
