This course introduces the basic concepts of international relations theory with a historical emphasis to assess contemporary conflicts through social, economic, environmental, political and cultural conditions. The United Nations, International Monetary Fund, NATO and other institutions are examined through case studies including globalization, genocide in the Sudan, state building in Kosovo, insurgencies in Latin America, nuclear proliferation in Asia and the Middle East, Russia's post-Cold War development and terrorism and instability in Afghanistan and Pakistan.This course may not be taken by Honors Program students as POL 225H covers similar material.
